When I first meet with a client, often his or her first request is for help with a specific medium. Sometimes they want to get on social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, but don’t know what to do with them. Sometimes they need brochures or ads.
Before I go down the yellow brick road with anyone, I examine their current brand and messaging. Do they even know what they’re saying about the business currently? Do they know what sets them a part? The usual answer when I start working with a small business is, no. My new clients might even have a cool logo, but they have no idea why they’re special even though they want you to think they are.
Here’s a great article on the power of integrated marketing messaging: Business Week – read it here. It applies to all businesses, not just the big boys. All businesses struggle with it but wouldn’t it be nice if it wasn’t you?
I’m a mom, a small business owner, and I’m a marketing professional with over a decade helping businesses with their branding and online presence. When I’m not spending time with my family or on my business, I love cooking (and eating), racquetball, yoga, and shopping. My favorite authors are Malcolm Gladwell and Steve Martin. My favorite movies are L.A. Story, Little Mermaid, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Trainspotting.
